Trakai, Lithuania

 

The castle of Trakai dates back to the 14th century and was the seat of the rulers of Lithuania. It is built on an island of Lake Galvé.

During the 15th century the town of Trakai was de de facto capital of Lithuania.

The wooden Synagogue of Trakai (Karaim kenesa). The Turkic-speaking Karaites (who are of Jewish faith) were resettled in Trakai from the Crimea by Grand Duke Vitautas towards the end of the 14th century.
